Students need to learn how to resolve problems as a life skill. We work on these skills and apply them to various subject related problems. Some of the skills that students use are:
- Becoming aware that there is a problem
- Clarifying what the problem is
- Brainstorming possible solutions to solve the problem
- Checking the possible solutions against the backdrop of values and principles to see if they align
- Collaboration with others to come up with solutions or seeking counsel when appropriate
- If the problem involves more than just one person consensus is required for solution implementation.
- Evaluating possible solutions based on, principles of the people involved
- Rejecting those solutions that do not fit with values and principles
- Creating an action plan to solve the problem
- Implementing and carrying out the action plan
- After the problem has been resolved reflecting on whether it actually was resolved and making changes to resolution strategy if needed.
- Monitoring situation to see if problem stays resolved
At every grade level, students work on resolving problems with progressively more complex skills.
