Title
Learning Goal - Writing Example: Clarify
Skill or Concept Description for Learning Goal

This is a tough one but mastery is especially important to students preparing for provincial exams in English or Socials.

Clarify - to make something easier to understand. To clarify your ideas, you must ask questions about the problem.

Clarifying is related to defining but has a broader application. For example, to clarify the concept of "_____" one must begin by asking the question, "What is ____?" (definition) and its flip-side, "What ____ isn't". (contrast) Examples are given to support the ideas presented and a summary is made at the end.

Suggested Strategies or Projects for Learning Goals

Use an essay form to clarify concepts like:

  • national identity
  • global community
  • geographic impact
  • economic impact
  • the influence of historical and social factors
  • gender bias
  • personal voice
  • gender equality
  • societal norms
  • kindness
  • patience
  • conservation of resources

Students of any age can learn to clarify ideas. Once a concept is chosen, preface writing with oral development questions such as:

  • What is ____?
  • How do you know this?
  • Where did you get your ideas?
  • Give me an example of what you mean when you say ______.
  • How would you explain this to someone who was 3 or 6 or 12?
  • What is the most important part of this concept?
  • Do you support the ideas presented in this concept? Why or why not?
  • What part of this makes the most sense?
  • What parts are unclear?
  • Where might we find more information?
