Textiles 12

Textile Foundations

Safe Use of Tools and Equipment

  • demonstrate safe use of tools and equipment needed to produce textile items.  Describe how you safely use both hand (scissors, pins, needles..) and power (sewing machine, serger, iron...) tools in your sewing pursuits.
  • identify and know how to respond appropriately to emergencies, including cuts, needle injuries, burns, electrical shocks, fires.  Describe how you would act if you were cut, poked0, burned or shocked in sewing pursuits.
  • select and use the appropriate sewing machine or serger and settings as needed.  When completing a sewing project what sewing machine and serger settings do you use?  How do you select which setting to use?
  • select and use the appropriate type of ironing/pressing equipment.  Describe the way you use the iron in your sewing pursuits.  How does it help you to complete a quality finished product?
  • manage time and resources in the classroom.  When completing a sewing project describe how you manage your time.   When you select a project to construct describe how you decide how much fabric and notions to purchase.  Are you thrifty with your fabric?

How Properties of Textile Fibres Affect Wear and Care

  • explain and use appropriate textile terminology. Are you familiar with most of these terms?
  • identify fibre content by using a variety of testing processes.  Do you know how to tell the content of a fabric you are using?  (Wool, Cotton, Rayon, Polyester and so forth) - the burn test link
  • justify fabric choice based on suitability for various purposes.  What fabric did you chose for a recent project?  Why did you select that fabric in terms of content and colour/design?
  • select and use specialty fabrics for advanced garment projects.  Describe the most challenging type of fabric you have worked with?  Why was it so hard to work with?  What ways did you problem-solve to get a satisfactory finished product?

Constructing Textile Items

  • demonstrate an understanding of pre-construction procedures.  Describe in detail the steps you take in preparing an item for sewing.  These are all the steps before you actually sit down at the sewing machine and start that first seam.
  • construct and repair simple garment and textile items using construction basics, including closures, stitching, reducing bulk, stabilizing, fitting, hemming, hand sewing.   This outcome will be assessed in your activity chart.  Continue to fill out that chart when you sew.

Applying Creative Processes

  • create textile items incorporating the elements and principles of design.  When constructing a textile item what choices do you make about the overall design of the garment?  (Consider things like choosing a pattern, and choosing a fabric colour and print).  Think about a recent project and describe why you chose the particular pattern and fabric.
  • experiment with basic processes used to print, texturize, and embellish fabric.  Think of a basic dress pattern you have completed.  Describe ways you could creatively add to that item in the following ways - selecting a creative print or patterned fabric, adding texture, embellishing the garment using another textile technique (embroidery, applique, patches, ruffles, ribbon, textured seams, buttons....).
  • investigate ways to reduce the environmental impact of clothing and textiles.  Do some quick research on ways that textile production impacts the environment.  What are some things you can do personally to reduce that impact?
  • critique and analyze the role and influence of international designers on the fashion industry.   What are some negative ways that the fashion industry influences young people?  What is your personal opinion of the function clothing should serve?  Support your opinion with scripture if possible.

Factors Affecting Textile Choice and Use

  • investigate historical, political, and cultural influences on fashion.  Consider your study of Canadian history this year from 1915 to the present.  Do some research and describe how clothing production and acquisition has changed in Canada during that time.
  • analyze the relationship between textile consumerism and global issues.  Most store bough garments are made in some other country (China, Peru, Bangladesh, Thailand...).  Most of these countries have a much lower standard of living and thus the pay workers in textile factories earn is much less than it would be in Canada.  This results in a lower consumer cost for clothing.  What are some other effects of foreign made clothing - look for both positive and negative ones?  Consider the economy of Canada and the countries where these garments are produced.  What would happen to local and foreign economies if countries could only purchase textile garments made locally?

Career Opportunities

  • analyze career opportunities and prerequisites related to the design, production, and marketing of fashion and textiles.  Select one career opportunity related to the production of textile products.  Describe this career and the steps one would take to pursue it.
