Art Exhibit
Intended Outcomes to be demonstrated:
- compare the effect of collections, installations, and displays of 2-D and 3-D images in a variety of settings.
- explain how particular combinations of elements and principles influence personal preference.
Task
Visit an Art Exhibit or Art Gallery and prepare a write-up of your experience. You might also choose to tell your teacher about this during voice conversation. Your dialogue of the experience should touch on the following points:
- What elements of the setting helped to display the pieces to their full advantage (lighting, props, dress-code etc)?
- Speak critically about any part of the experience that detracted from the artwork.
- Share/describe your favourite pieces (at least 2) from the collection as well as your least favourite (at least 1) and speak in detail about why you chose these pieces. What about them struck you? Why do they appeal/not appeal to you? What emotion do they evoke in you?
- If you were able to purchase one piece from the collection, how would you like to see it displayed in a home?
Finally, create a rough sketch of the artwork in it's ideal display setting and submit this sketch with your write-up.

Task
Aboriginal art is a key feature of cultural preservation and expression. In order to examine how this is true you will need to create a major project which examines one Aboriginal group from BC and an Aboriginal group from another continent. You will be looking for similarities and differences and examining how art is a central source of identity in these two cultures.
Your project should highlight the ceremonial and everyday uses for the artworks, their historical and current uses. In examining the history of the artwork, be sure to mention how the production and tools used to create it have changed and how technology has come play a role in the production of the art. When speaking about the ceremonial uses, talk about what the artists are typically inspired by - what are the meanings behind the artwork?
In your examination the cultural impacts of artwork to these cultures point out any periods of history where the people group were unable to engage in their art and how this impacted the community.
Finally, you must be sure to mention what ethical issues surround cultural artwork, specifically aboriginal artwork. How do these groups see ownership of their art? What are some considerations non-community members must be aware of when re-creating or imitating their style?
